Great architecture, a sight for sore eyes
Commonly noted for its resemblance to Venice, Portogruaro is the only true urban set in the vicinity of Bibione that retains a genuinely historical air. It’s not the oldest city in the region – it was founded no sooner than the 12th century – but it kept the architectural heritage it accumulated since then. So, if you’ve had enough of the Venetian Riviera and want to hit the hinterlands, consider Portogruaro: you’re in for an unprecedented sightseeing experience.
Plus, keep in mind Portogruaro is part of the Lison-Pramaggiore route: the historical “Doge’s vineyards” wine region from where Bibione and the rest of the Venetian Riviera brings its DOC labels.
Portogruaro is crossed by the Lemene River. Its meandering course explains the city’s resemblance to Venice. Look for the so-called Corso Martiri della Liberta, dotted with palazzi built in the Venetian Gothic style around the 15th century. A sight to remember is offered by the 16th century Villa Comunale (the Town Hall), which is also home to a paleontological museum and to the public library. It is located opposite Porta di San Gottardo.
Right behind Palazzo Municipale there’s the ancient mill on the Lemene River. Due to its historical value, it is used as art exhibition space.
Museo Nazionale Concordiese is right around the corner. Explore the central area in depth and head for Via Cavour, packed with a number of historical palazzi built in a Gothic Renaissance style. The 14th century Church of Sant’Agnese is also a must.
ATVO buses run between Portogruaro and Bibione regularly. Check with ATVO to see schedules and ticket prices. But you can always drive to Portogruaro: head northwards to San Michele Al Tagliamento and then turn west on SS 14. That will take you straight to Portogruaro.
Alternative routes are also at hand, but the distance is not that long anyway (some 32 kilometers) if you decide on this road.
